              MATERA

              Matera

The "Città dei Sassi", whose origin is lost in the mists of time, has seen the almost uninterrupted presence of man in the different eras, from the Stone Age to the modern era, passing through the Iron, Copper, Bronze Age first and the Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Lombard, Saracen, Norman and Swabian presence. The most suggestive place of these findings is constituted by the so-called "Sassi", the Barisano and the Caveoso, two small valleys that open on the side of the Gravina torrent in which man, since ancient times has dug calcarenite rock (called tufa) obtaining, first of all, caves for dwelling, Rupestrian churches and crypts (all examples of architecture called "in negative".

Today the Sassi are one of the largest historical centres in the world to be saved and preserved and, for this reason, they have been elevated by Unesco to a World Heritage Site.

Also worth visiting are the Romanesque-Apulian Cathedral, the Churches of St. John the Baptist and St. Francis of Assisi, the National Museum "D. Ridola ", rich in finds and testimonies of the civilisation of Magna Graecia.

              VENOSA

              VENOSA

The "City of Horace" is a small town located about 70 km from Matera.

A very interesting town, starting with the Amphitheatre, the Abbey of the Trinity, the Castle of Balzo and ending with the House of Horace and the Jewish Catacombs, the Archaeological Park and the Cathedral.

Venosa rises on a spur of volcanic origin formed by the ramification of 2 valleys, life flourished there in the lower Paleolithic.

In 291 B. C., the Romanization phase began and, with the extension to Venosa of Via Appia (Regina viarium 190 B. C.), the city enjoys the privileged state of a town hall, in 65 B. C. the birth of the poet Quinto Orazio Flacco was recorded. In the late antiquity and early Christian age, Venosa suffers repeated Ostrogothic and Saracen raids, cultural stimuli come from Byzantines and Lombards.

              METAPONTO

              Metaponto

A well-known seaside resort on the Ionian coast, with its pristine waters and golden sandy beaches, it preserves much evidence of the civilisation of Magna Graecia.

              MARATEA

              MARATEA

Maratea "the Pearl of the Tyrrhenian Sea", the most celebrated of the beaches of Lucania, invites you to visit the famous Christ the Redeemer, who rises overlooking the sea and the beautiful Church of St. Blaise.

The village, an ancient part of Maratea, preserves the medieval layout with narrow alleys. Here you will find the Church of S. Maria Maggiore with a medieval bell tower, just below, there is the Church of the Rosary.

              pollino

              POLLINO

Located at the foot of the Pollino massif, Rotonda is the gateway to the beautiful Pollino National Park, where you can still see some rare examples of Pino Loricato, asphodels, narcissuses, as well as traces of small mammals that live on the mountain plateaus, kestrels, woodpeckers and imperial ravens.

It is advisable to visit the Anthropological Museum where you can admire a rare specimen of "Elephans antiquus".

The Pollino National Park, 196000 hectares of "protected area" of the southern Apennines, is a place of nature, landscapes, biodiversity, settlements and activities, history, culture and environment.

It is the Park of the Pino Loricato, of the fir-beech association, of the golden eagle, of the Apennine wolf, of the roe deer of Orsomarso, of the Dolomitic rocks, of the tympas, caves, cliffs of the gorges, rivers and valleys.
